It is 1846 when twelve-year-old street urchin Ian Walsh and his eleven-year-old drummer friend Danny Higgins decide to abandon their hardships and travel from Ireland to America. With hopes of landing jobs building a railroad in California and finding the lost cities of gold, Ian and Danny board a cargo ship bound for New York. As the ship sets sail on the sea, Danny-affectionately nicknamed "Smiles" by the crew-is happier than he has ever been. Once Ian finds his sea legs, he contentedly spends his days perched at the bow of the ship writing in his diary. After a twenty-three-day journey across the Atlantic, the ship docks in the port of New York. The two boys soon learn that the United States is at war with Mexico and that the President is calling for volunteers to meet the Mexican threat. There is no question-Ian and Danny feel compelled to help and sign up as drummer boys in the First New York. As the two boys begin a new life in a country in the midst of great change, they learn to rely on their instinct, scrappiness, and most of all, courage.

I strongly recommend this book..The author did an excellent job! and it's a wonderful way of getting your children find adventure in history.
I loved this book. It meant a lot to me to read it. I thought the author blended the personal lives of his characters and the historical times they were living so well making "The Musicians" a very exciting read.
Bought this book for my grandsons for Christmas and they loved the story and adventure. They want me to find more by the same author. It is well written, full of history and very entertaining and thought provoking for little men.
This historical adventure is very enjoyable for all ages. Liam McAuley does a nice job adding historical facts to his novel without making it boring. There is no "adult content" to be concerned about which in this day and age is refreshing! I highly recommend it for young adults and I am looking forward to the sequel.
I read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it! Great historical on the Mexican American War as seen through the eyes of two young kids. Should be a must read on every history/social studies book list. Kids and adults both will enjoy this story very much. Can't wait for the sequel to come out!
